San Moise

A deep blue dusk smudges the the facades of the locked shops surrounding the stone campo. To the west a small crumbling bridge with iron railings arches across the Rio San Moise. Numerous gondolas are moored there, floating as much in evening mist as water. The 14th century belltower intrigues the eye, topped with a spire of brick. But dominating the campo is the church of San Moise. Having passed through several incarnations, it at last expired, petrifying in the bloated form a Baroque nightmare. The looming edifice resembles a mostrous wedding cake, elaborately frosted with melting icing in rippled columns and sagging festoons. Ornately embellished, the walls and roof are further bedecked with posturing statuary thickly coated with with pigeon droppings. The heavy statues seem to teeter precariously on their pedastals.
