Grand Canal

The wide, dark water licks slyly at the stone foundations of the palazzos that line the canal. Old, gracefully decaying, magnificently ornamented like figments of fantasy, they stand on foundations rising from the water, with long, slender pali for tying boats instead of doorsteps. They loom over the water, their lamps casting long, shivering shadows, the recesses and archways of their massive fronts concealing the unknown.

pali (gondola mooring poles) is here.
