Mendocino headlands
The headlands above the magnificent, and sometimes furious Pacific Ocean. From here, in the spring and fall, you can witness the journey of the great whales as they make their way to and from the warm birthing waters of Mexico.
At any time of year, there is a constant flow of ocean going traffic only a few miles off shore. Closer in the daily armada of fishing boats move up and down the coast, doing their best to eke out a living from the dwindling supply of sea life that was once so abundant here. You notice a large bench here, waiting for weary walkers, or just an interested sight seer to stop for a rest. The bench is so big, that if you sit in it, you feel like a small child swinging your legs in a grownup's chair.
From this vantage point, you can see Mendocino harbor, and the mouth of Big River. In the late 1800's, this was a very busy shipping center for the millions of redwood trees that were needed to build the homes of new Californians. Today it is quiet.
A few feet from where you stand is a wooden stairway, built in to the cliff, that takes you down to the secluded beach below. It does look a little scary but the beach looks very inviting!
Prayer Tree is here.
